The War of Dekko

The world of Dekko is in a state of international war…

[picture sketch of something dramatic]

The year is 936. Drought and disease have caused attrition in the continent of Todhur. Tensions across borders has reached an irreversible point. Diplomacy has failed. The western nation of Qamalia has begun its invasion of the prosperous and fertile neutral nation of Baziline. In response, the large and historic southern empire of Mabrakaan is forced to intervene with the belligerent nation.

Meanwhile, a young Qamalian citizen named Paul voluntarily enlists in the army. A starry-eyed idealist from the poor rural fields of Wiznia, Paul is seeking a cause worth fighting. He lies about his age to join the military, where he proves to be a competent tactician during missions, and he becomes an officer before reaching adulthood. However, as a young commander, he is only beginning to internalize the scale of the conflict before him, and the role he is destined to fill.

Is the above pitch interesting? If so, read on!

What is this project?

Parapet Vanguard (PV) is a world building and design exercise for a game that is not seriously intended for production. It is an attempt to construct an immersive fantasy world in the form of a console RPG. Parapet Vanguard has influences from the World War 1 era, for which the writing team (read: I) did research on arms, uniforms and diplomatic events. Like other large-scale RPGs, Parapet Vanguard is ambitious in its storytelling, full of in-game lore, and it features some (hopefully) memorable characters in the middle of an epic conflict.

Characters in Parapet Vanguard

This guy, Paul*, is the main player character:

paul

*names subject to change

Paul enlists himself into the army of his home country--a belligerent nation--because of existential strife compounded by his youth and provincial upbringing. In the army, Paul encounters a gentlemen with even more crippling internal crises, a senior officer named Keightley who questions his role in this war. Keightley's character has good support and buff skills:

keightley

Paul goes on to meet other characters, such as Victoria on the left. Victoria is a bright magic student from another empire who is reluctantly drafted into combat, and whose illustration seems to be suffering from anatomy issues. He also encounters and develops romantic feelings for Emily, depicted on the right. Emily is another parochial character, who has aspirations to explore the world and whose character's combat role is not yet ascribed:

victoria

emily

As you progress through Parapet Vanguard, you will learn about the motivation of each of these characters, and you will meet meet many more who will join your cause. Bonded by a shared sense of dissatisfaction with the violent governance around the world, your party is determined to make the world a more peaceful place.

So, there's my introduction to this game. Things get pretty nerdy and technical on this page from this point forward, so hit the back button or beware!

The World of Dekko

Empire of Qamalia

Qamalia is a vast and historic Empire in the snowy southern part of the continent, and it is where the main character lives. Magic is illegal in Qamalia.

Architecturally, Qamalia borrows from Russian Baroque architecture and the pensive sombreness of Tolstoy novels.

Places of Interest in Qamalia

Capital_name, The Qamalian capital

"The snow here never stops. Why does dad have to work in the capital?" -Ambassador ambassador_name's daughter

Capital_name is the political heart and largest metropolis of Qamalia.

Empire of Makrabaan

Magic Empire to the North. Separated from Qamalia by neighboring smaller kingdoms, and the Mountains of mountain_name. Tropical equatorial climate. Architecture draws from Southern Asian (Southern India) and Central American (Mayan) stone temples.

Places of Interest in Makrabaan

Capital2_name, the capital of Makrabaan

"I wish I could stay here, but the rent's so darned high these days." -Some guy

Capital_name is the political heart and largest metropolis of Qamalia.

Places of Interest in Makrabaan

The festive Seaside_porttown

Perpetually in a state of celebration, the town of Seaside_porttown's nightly street fair is a big draw for tourists across the Empire during the holiday.

Capital_name is the political heart and largest metropolis of Qamalia.

Some specific dungeons and independent zones

The Underground Mausoleum of King_name

In an ironic attempt at modesty, the dying King declared: "My greed has caused so much sin in my life. Let my tomb reach the depths of Hell itself so that I may atone."

The underground Mausoleum is a cul-de-sac that serves as a dungeon in the second 1/3rd of the game. However, in the third 1/3rd, the player can unlock an exit from the dungeon to another zone. It is located in the middle kingdoms between Qamalia and Mabrakaan.

The Chromatic Shrine of monastery_name

"I notice, when I inhale the vapors at this curious shrine, that I am instilled with a feeling of wonderment and childlike awe. I also find my appetite increases."

The chromatic shrine is a mountain village adjacent to a monastery. It is in an autonomous region within Mabrakaan. A single bridge allows access to the shrine itself, which is necessary for story progression.

Equipment in PV

This is a mock screenshot of the character equipment screen. The interface should be familiar to those who've previously played Japanese RPGs like Final Fantasy.
