LUMINOUS BLUE

This page is under development! As usual though, these notes are pretty transparent to reveal the thought process, if only they're a bit incomprehensible. Feel free to peruse.

Introduction

[Introduction]

-Monster art direction: they will be one level above Evangelion towards naturalistic monster design. Monsters in LumiBlue are more like Sachiel or Shamshel than the Platonic solid and microscopic angels (although the latter are interesting! they could make for fascinating level design). In addition, by avoiding resemblance to terrestrial animals they should maintain an otherworldly feel. Although Cambrian animals look pretty alien and I might reference these too.

Characters

Our heros have a high amount of synergy. They bond over a common goal to protect their fellow humankind.

Hero - Captain M

At 32 years old, Captain M grew up as the eldest sibling of 4. Quick to rise up for a worthy cause, Captain M is overreactive and a bit clumsy. He will go to great lengths to enact a plan for the benefit of the people he cares for.

Favorite Quote: "There is nothing more beautiful than how the waves refuse to stop kissing the shore no matter how many times it's been turned away." (He has a not-so-hidden romantic side.)

Heroine - Captain F

32 1/2 years old, is well-read and quick witted. However, she is often quicker to act than think. She's smarter than most, but the benefits are outweighed by her impatience and hastiness.

Favorite Quote: "A good plan executed now is better than a great plan executed later." -General George S. Patton

Scientist

Effeminate middle aged man, careful and timid. He tries to be the parent of the heros when they act recklessly, but often fails to reach them.

Arms dealer

char_Armsdealer is a punky tomboy and daughter of a general. She is terrible at putting on makeup, but she took a job at a fashionable apparel store in a mall because it gives her access to specific POS hardware, and it helps pay her engineering school tuition. She sells the heros arms in the backroom. Unlike char_Scientist he is an enabler of their childish rashness.

Stages

[I] 1: Brooklyn

An egg?? Let's make it hatch! The braintree gets loose on the streets of the city. Stops its terrorization of the locals!

"S..shouldn't we analyze the egg before we attack?" --char_Scientist

Art direction notes: The Braintree draws some influence from Flaahgra from Metroid Prime and the wobbler from Sanctum 2.

[IIa] 2: Guadalajara

Story notes: The Dog_demon is set to make contact on one of the continent's most beautiful cultural sites! Protect the museums!

Gameplay notes: this battle is pretty straightforward

[IIb] 3: Iowa

The Giant Saucer is flying its way toward the [goal]. Can we stop it in the park?

[IIIa] 4: Oil Rig

Birds need to rest too. This rig is where we'll catch him!

[IIIb] Stage 5: Sacramento

A demon is flying down the

[stage art]

Stage description: The characters land a glider onto a section of an interstate highway just beyond the downtown area. The battle takes place on a highway overpass. Evergreen pines in the scenery accent the vertical aspect of this stage.

Boss and boss strategy: serpentine unistomate with large mouth and no eyes. charges you with its tail at high speeds, which you must dodge. you can try to "Bald Bull" it and take a well timed shot at it just before it hits you, but this risks almost certain death if you fail. after you dodge a few of these attacks, it will get tired but try to eat you. the mouth is a weak spot!

Special items useful for this stage: Jetpack or grappling hook to get onto overpass

[IVa] 6: Arizona

A miniature golf course seems to atract this brightly glowing underground space demon.

[IVb] 7: Vancouver

The IGBM [Intergalactic Ballistic Missile] is arming itself?! A microscopic space demon is taking over! We must manually deactivate the missile from inside--an intimate battle takes place with Hal 9000?

[IVc] 8: Louisiana

[stage art]

Story notes: This is a big one! It's headed straight for the [goal]... but the chemical plant is in its way!

The stage: The heroes set up in a farmhouse where the space demon is set to make contact. Expecting to easily subjugate the tiny demon, Karl realizes he made a mistake in his calculation by about 4,000 fold. The demon lands on the house, crushing it, making its way towards the [goal] through the chemical plant.

[V] 9: The portal opens

Boss: If you've beaten Contra 3 for the Super Nintendo, you may recall the final boss in the alien nest is a flying brain/wheel of fortune. There was a grab bag of forms the boss would take on, which were randomly selected and you would have to beat a few of them to defeat the boss. The 9th boss of LumiBlue is very much like this.

[VI] 10: inside the portal

I am thinking giant foetus, like in Half Life 1. This will probably change.

Equipment

Things you can buy in the store or find in monster arenas. In progress.
